MaharanaUdai Singh laid the foundation stones of Udaipur as early as 1557 AD. With the magnificent Aravalli mountain range acting as a natural barrier, the city remained out of reach to the fiercest warriors including the Mughal armies. It remained the capital of Mewar until 1947, when Mewar province became a part of Rajasthan.The city of Udaipur is famous for its calm surrounds, pictorial lakes and shimmering palaces.
